I still read the backs of cereal boxes.
I think they’re awesome.
A fews years ago I became oddly intrigued with a box of Lucky Charms.
The cardboard sported a little, giggling, Leprechaun, man as he surfed down the rainbow on an orange marshmallow. (What a life!) He looked very happy to be living in a land of magical, junk food. As I munched and looked closer, I discovered that the whimsical picture was meant to be a game! If you cut it out correctly, a coordinated person could use it to sling-shot cereal pieces into cardboard pots of gold.
What captivated me the most, however, was the name of the game, “Flying Star Flinger!”
For some reason, this particular collision of words struck me. “Star Flinger,” I let the words roll off of my tongue. It sounded like they were meant to be together.
I imagined myself hurtling giant balls of shimmer-light through space until they found a resting place. How much FUN would that be!?
The giant grin of my Jesus filled my mind.
“I did that,” He seemed to whisper.
“My God is a Star-Flinger!” I suddenly wanted to shout. “The Real Star-Flinger!… even better, Star-Slinger!”
Without warning, my imagination was suddenly FLOODED with a string of sizzling adjectives to describe our Savior.
They weren’t necessarily scholarly, but rather fun, loud, and vivacious like He is!!!
They just kept coming, and as I headed up to bed, I felt compelled to write them down before I forgot. (Hoping to avoid waking up my sister) I stumbled into our room in the dark and grabbed a marker to chronicle on our white-board. I scribbled furiously, nearly illegibly, in the dim light.
At last satisfied with the late-night brain dump, I said a prayer of thanks and crawled under the covers.
Wouldn’t you know it,…the next morning during church, our worship-leader leaned over and whispered in my ear, “Could you introduce this next song?”
I nodded and peered down at the title, “Glory to God Forever,” by Steve Fee.
My dad was beginning to dive into his lesson and as I listened, my pulse began to beat furiously. “We serve a creative God with a huge imagination!” he was saying and began to explain the intricacy of His creation. “He hung the stars in place! …And we honor Him when we use our creativity to bring Him glory! We allow His image to shine through us!”
At that instant, I knew exactly why God had allowed me to be so fascinated with the back of the Lucky Charms box. I asked my neighbor for a pen and begged God to mentally recreate what I had jotted on the white-board just a few hours before. Within a few adrenaline surging minutes, I had a paper hastily covered with my introduction, HIS introduction.
Breathing a prayer, I hopped up the steps, pulled close to the microphone, and read—
“My Jesus is….

In truth, this list could have stretched on forever….will go on forever.
Our God is magnificently, astoundingly, eternally captivating.
There’s so much we don’t know yet.
For now, we just keep singing.
Never despise the ordinary things, for in them you may find a missing note to this everlasting song.
“Creator God you gave me breath so I could praise your matchless name all my days. So let my whole life be a blazing offering, a life that shouts and sings the praises of our King. Glory to God! Glory to God Forever!” Steve Fee
