He was pacing.
He knew it, but He couldn’t help it.
All of Heaven had been talking about it for weeks… He’d been longing for it forever.
Now it was here, finally here, and He could hardly contain Himself. He wrung His trembling hands and clasped them behind His back. Pretty soon He’d be wearing holes in the Throne room floor.
What in the world was He supposed to say? What was He supposed to do? He’d been through this a million times, but now that the day had actually arrived, He wasn’t sure He’d actually be able to… He froze.
They were here.
He knew it.
And they were standing right behind Him.
For a moment there was perfect stillness but for the wild beating of His heart.
Then the King of The Universe took a deep breath, closed His eyes, and slowly turned to face the most beautiful thing He had ever seen,
… it was you.
And for a moment, He couldn’t do anything.
All He could do was stare at this beloved creature waiting before Him.
This one whom He’d breathed life into, given His life for, chosen before the beginning of time to be His child. This one whom just the very thought of shot tingles of joy from His head to His toes, sent His soul on an untamed dance of delight.
This was what He had been waiting for.
Standing here in this moment of unmatched joy, everything He had ever planned to do disappeared.
So He did the only thing He could do, He ran. Ran like a Father runs for His long lost child, and He swooped you up from beneath the arms just like you were a little kid again, and He spun you around and around and around– just listening to you laugh- and thinking it was the most wonderful sound He had ever heard.
Then He did the craziest thing, He laughed too. He threw back His head and let loose with a belly laugh that sent chills up your back.
You two collapsed in a glorious, giggling heap after turning dozens of dizzying circles, certain that all of Heaven echoed with the joy of your homecoming.
You simply stared, a smile of amazement on your face, as He inched a little closer and whispered,
“I’ve been waiting to do that forever…”
How was it possible that this God of yours had already surpassed your wildest imaginings?…How only a minute ago, you had laid, trembling and gaunt with death, in another world.
Had that really just happened!?
You seemed to remember being afraid of something, but you couldn’t quite recall what it was.
The memory had already begun to fade, like a dream when one awakes, no match for the brightness and reality of the morning.
“Surely,” you thought, “I have just now awoken for the first time…”
“And the last,” His voice was soft as He finished your thought for you.
In an unashamed display of emotion, His bottom lip began to quiver, eyes overflowing with silent tears.
Tenderly, you reached up and placed a hand on His face. “Daddy, why are you crying?”
“Because,” He searched your wondering eyes with love, “you called me Daddy.”
You didn’t realize you were crying until His thumb gently traced your cheek, coming away wet with the weight of past sorrows.
“Enough of this!” He said, flicking His fingers purposefully towards the distance, sending your tears evaporating into eternity.
“That will be the last of those as well!” He winked.
A wink that said, “You’re safe now.”
A wink that said, “This is only the beginning…”
With strong arms He pulled you into an embrace so tight that you could feel His heart beating against your own.
His mind rang with the clanging of nails, the taunting of crowds, the trembling of earth, and the emptying of graves.
“It was so worth it. It was all worth it,” He thought and then whispered.
“It’s okay if you never let go…”
“The LORD your God is in your midst, a mighty one who will save; he will rejoice over you with gladness; he will quiet you by his love; he will exult over you with loud singing.” Zephaniah 3:17
